Why are Bears Creatures of habit?
Bears are creatures of habit and 90% of the time, you will find bear in the same location and there is normally a reason for acting like a habit driven animal. The reasons bear are creatures of habit are numerous and they include some the following reasons:
It may be a drug interdiction program where bear is looking for drug traffic at a focal point. He doubles as a traffic cop while looking for the drug traffic. Traffic law gives him a reason for pulling over suspected drug traffickers and checking out the driver and his cargo.
A local community may have elected to pay for a bear on their portion of the highway. Therefore, bear will usually be with 5 miles of the community.
A specific portion of a highway may be prone to traffic accidents related to speeding. These may be areas with long down hill portions of the highway where it is easy to lose track of your speed.
Most bears have Statewide jurisdiction, but they are usually assigned to work within a specific county. Therefore bear will usually turn around at the county line.
State lines and county lines are unique in that they are both entry points. If a county wants to stop speeders in their county, they may choose to do it as they enter their county. This way the speeder will be more likely to maintain a safe speed following the citation and keep their citizens safe. The best example of this type of bear trap is Northbound on Interstate 5 entering Orange County from San Diego County. The northern portion of San Diego County includes Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base and traffic speeds tend to get very excessive in the open coastal plain. As they enter Orange County, the Christianitos Road "git-on" ramp sometimes have police cars lined up like taxies at the airport waiting for speeders. This one spot is credited with generating more revenue than any other beartrap in the United States.
Bear is a ferocious revenue source for Government and most communities want Bear working within their community.
